District 18

City History

​

   District 18 has had a long and tumultuous history, much of it buried beneath the streets and hidden within the Downside. Once a normal metropolitan city located somewhere in the heart of Europe, it suffered from a mix of rampant climate change, population decline, and economic collapse. At the founding of the European Coalition, the 1st Coalition Assembly created the District Initiative. An effort that would revitalize nearly abandoned and failing cities, making them into high tech, urban metropolises and centers of economic and population growth.

   District 18 is one such success story of this initiative, having come a long way from it's ruined, collapsing past to a high tech, gleaming testament to human ingenuity and problem solving. The District had managed to explode in growth rapidly, coming from it's lowest at 1000 individual citizens to nearly a quarter of a million in the span of decades. Along with this, technological innovations and the advent of the Echo and Synth created a mecca of high tech living.

  While the District has been a success, much of it's history has been lost or suppressed by the overseeing government, those in charge feeling it best to leave the darkness behind and look forward to the bright future. Despite this, the District still hosts many hints of what it once was, and it only takes an intrepid and inquisitive mind to see the signs left behind by the old world District 18 was built atop of.

City Levels

​

Level 1 - High End

Level 1 of District 18 is known by most as High End due to it's towering corporate skyscrapers and high end living, with those that call it home saying it is like "Living in the Clouds." High End boasts a number of entertainment attractions within it's Entertainment District such as the Cineplex Movie Theatre, and the Spotlight Opera House and Theatre, a number of bars and restaurants, and an eco park. Alongside that, High End hosts the seat of the city's government with the City Hall as well as a top of line Medical Center and the home of Sky News Network, the city's premiere news source.

Level 2 - Mid-Way

Level 2 of District 18 is most often referred to as Mid-Way. Mid-Way boasts the largest number of commercial businesses and is called home by the majority of the city's citizens. Mid-Way boasts a large number of commercial attractions such as a game store, a number of restaurants including a flying junk, and a grocery store. Mid-Way also includes on of the most happening spots in District 18, the club known as The Glitch, where even High Enders have been spotted frequenting. The District 18 Police Department and Wing Cutters Division also call Mid-Way home.

Level 3 - Downside

Level 3 of District 18 is known by most as Downside. Shrouded in the shadows of Mid-Way and Sky City, it is considered by many as the city's dirty little secret. Remnants of the Old City that District 18 was built atop still stand, claimed by the many forgotten lower class trying to survive. The most dangerous level of the city, it is the most sparsely patrolled by the D18 Police Department, giving rise to a number of criminal gangs, illegal enterprises, and havens for rogue synths and echoes. Despite this, it hosts a number of popular attractions such as the enticing den of vice and sin known as the Redlight District, and rumors abound of an arena built for illegal fabricant fights.
